about

The sound of waves crashing opens Texas-born, Colombia-based electronic producer Aserrin’s debut album, Tropic of, Vol. 1, establishing a pattern of ebb and flow which underpins the work as a whole. In his first album under the alias Aserrín—it’s Spanish for “sawdust”—DJ and producer Matt Ballenger imbues his hardware with humanism and warmth to create a sweaty mix of Balearic chill and urbane abandon. It transports the listener to the equator, both on its shores and in its clubs.

Ballenger spent his early teens religiously taping music at night from the city’s late nineties radio stations. Tropic of, Vol. 1 is a callback to this period of his life and the first in a planned series of ‘rave tapes.’ Combining a wide range of influences from dance music all over the world, Ballenger reveals his own rapidly developing style.

Tropic of, Vol 1 is a testament to the synthetic and organic approach Ballenger has cultivated in his music, something that sounds born only of his own experiences.
